In this year’s inter school competition pupils from South West secondary schools were assigned interesting and at the same time challenging business topics. The winning team from Liskeard School & Community College, chose to research and present on ‘the advancement of payment methods and Cryptocurrency. The second place went to a team from Colyton Grammar School who examined soft and hard human resources and their pros and cons. The third prize was awarded to pupils from Plymouth Studio School who investigated how technological innovations shape our future and the future of business.
Teams from Budehaven Community School and Marine Academy Plymouth examined topics, such as human resources, innovations in business and the evolution of finance and its impact on society. There was no prior preparation needed on behalf of teachers or pupils as the topics were announced in the morning on the actual day of the competition. Therefore pupils spent the entire morning working on their presentations with Plymouth University business student ambassadors. This allowed them to develop their research and analytical skills, to learn to work under pressure, to a strict deadline and to improve their communication and team working skills. All the presentations were of a very high quality and standard.
This is the 4th year Plymouth Business has run the Year 12 and Year 13 presentation competition, offering pupils an opportunity to learn about the Faculty of Business, Plymouth University and student life in general, to meet the teaching staff, to connect with the current students and to develop their soft, enterprise, presentation and employability skills. The pupils greatly enjoyed their day and the feedback states unanimously that the day made them more likely to apply to University.
The same opportunity is approaching for Year 9 and Year 10 pupils and the presentation competition for this category is scheduled for April 2018. Registration is now open and I am looking forward to welcoming pupils from across the South West.
