Devon Collaborative Outreach Network (DCON) organised a Primary Open Day during which we welcomed around 200 Year 6 students from various primary schools. DCON’s outreach events and activities aim to provide opportunities for young people to learn of the value of higher education, while at the same time, exposing them to the diverse range of programmes that are offered in the their region. DCON is a partnership between Plymouth University, the University of St Mark & St John, Plymouth College of Art, and other partner colleges that aims to raise awareness of higher education by promoting outreach events to schools and colleges in the Devon region.
The day was a great success and pupils enjoyed lectures and workshops on topics such as Marketing, Branding, Mono Printing, Maths, Geology, Medicine, History, Photography and many more.
My contribution towards the day was creating and delivering workshop on Marketing and Branding. Pupils from Tavistock Primary School learnt about business, customer relations, Marketing Mix and branding. We also covered topics such as straplines (taglines or slogans) and how business must stand out from the competition in terms of price, quality or service.
After a short interactive lecture the pupil’s task was to create a new healthy drink or breakfast cereal. In teams of four, pupils had to work together to create a new product, think how to differentiate that product from the rest, create a company name, logo, brand, strapline and design packaging and at the end of the workshop prepare a 3 minute presentation introducing their company and product.
It was a delight to work with such talented, engaging and creative pupils. Their teamwork, discussion and dedication to the task was fascinating. Their ideas were well thought out and researched, what’s more their presentation skills and teamwork would make every teacher and parent proud.
